About

Ébéniste Studio began in 1999 as a fabrication studio for high end interior woodwork and fine furniture, for interior designers and architects. The studio discontinued fabrication in 2008, and began doing only original designs and one-of-a-kind artwork using historic finishing techniques.

Steve Ogle, owner, was born in New Bedford, MA. He attended The College of St. Rose in Albany, NY to study sculpture and drawing, then spent the next 20 years working in different shops, from Manhattan to San Francisco to become a master cabinetmaker. Since 2009 he has resided in Savannah, GA with wife Jane and cat Samantha, and has continued to create unique art in mixed media.

“When I work with it, I’m working at texture and how light reflects off of it. Contrast of sheens. That’s the thing that’s interesting about sculpture, the object shows you how space moves around it, the same way water shapes stone in a stream. Air and space do the same thing. I am the water. How I feel about what I’m doing is inevitably going to be reflected in how I present that piece. There’s no way to separate myself from that movement. I don’t want to tell people what to see or how to see my work. When I tell people what to see, it cheats them out of doing the work they should be doing themselves. Nobody tells anyone how to feel about a piece of music. You either like it or you don’t.”
